Austrian films have a talent for holding up a mirror to the quirks of the national psyche. In doing so, they remain deeply compelling and internationally acclaimed – from Haneke's Palme d'Or winners to the dark comedies that capture everyday Austrian absurdity.

Austria has produced some of Europe's most celebrated filmmakers and films. Michael Haneke, perhaps the most internationally recognized Austrian director, has won the Palme d'Or at Cannes twice. Films like "Amour", "The White Ribbon" and "Funny Games" showcase the Austrian cinema's affinity for uncomfortable truths, psychological depth and unsettling social critique.
