GeneralAustria's rich and diverse arts and cultural scene during the summer is the focus of this issue. Many of its long-established institutions are renowned far beyond the country's borders, such as Vienna's Burgtheater and the Vienna State Opera.
More unusual venues for experiencing art and culture have also become highlights on the calendars of many visitors: the floating stage of the Bregenz Festival, the former riding hall of the Museumsquartier, a spa resort in the mountains outside Vienna, and Tyrol's Renaissance and Baroque churches and castles all provide wonderful settings for enjoying plays, operas, and concerts. Especially during the summer, one festival follows another, offering something for every taste.
For literature enthusiasts, we present Ingeborg Bachmann, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday this year. For young people and their parents, we report on a successful mobile phone experiment involving 72,000 students. And together with the chef of Austria's national football team, we are keeping our fingers crossed for the team's qualification for the World Cup!
If you would like to explore Austrian colloquial language or dialects, we recommend our audio features and exercises, which are now specially marked for easy identification.
