Customs & Traditions in Carinthia: A cultural journey through Austria's SouthGeneral

Tradition and customs play an important part in Austria's Southernmost region. Fiercely proud of its rich cultural heritage, you'll find a plethora of unique practices in Carinthia that set it apart from other Austrian provinces.

Carinthia's cultural identity is shaped by its position at the crossroads of three cultures – Austrian-German, Slovenian and Italian influences all leave their mark on the region's food, music, language and customs. From the Almabtrieb (cattle drives down from alpine pastures in autumn) to traditional folk music and the unique Carinthian polyphonic singing style (Kärntner Volksgesang) – a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage – the region offers a fascinating window into Austria's diverse cultural landscape.
