From Haydn to Mozart: Introducing Austria's most famous classical composersGeneral

When thinking about Austria and classical music, the Viennese Waltz and Mozart will most likely be the first things that come to mind. And it's true – Austria's contribution to the classical music canon is extraordinary and far-reaching.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in Salzburg in 1756, remains perhaps the most celebrated composer in history. His prolific output – over 800 works across every major genre – was achieved in just 35 years of life. Joseph Haydn, often called the 'Father of the Symphony', spent much of his career in Austria and profoundly shaped the development of classical forms.

Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven (who spent most of his adult life in Vienna), Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner all contributed to making Vienna the undisputed capital of classical music during the 18th and 19th centuries. This remarkable concentration of musical genius in one place and era continues to define Austria's cultural identity today.
